Andreas Butz - Professional Activities

I'm one of the founders and Co-organizers of the International Symposium on Smart Graphics since its existence. It started in 2000 as a AAAI spring symposium, together with Antonio Krüger and Patrick Olivier, and turned into a self-contained symposium the next year. In 2008, it will be held in Rennes, France.

In 2007, I was the short paper and poster chair for IUI 2007, together with Joyce Chai. I was also the Video Chair of Pervasive 2005 and the Poster chair of ISMAR 05.

In 2004-2006, I co-organized the workshop series on Multi-User and Ubiquitous User Interfaces (MU3I), together with Christian Kray, and other varying organizers. It was held in conjunction with the Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI) conferences.

At Pervasive 2005, I co-organized the workshop on user experience design for pervasive computing together with Lucia Terrenghi, Irma Lindt and Mike Kuniavsky.

In 2003, I co-organized the Physical Interaction (PI03) Workshop on Real World User Interfaces, together with Albrecht Schmidt and Steve Benford at Mobile HCI 2003.

In 1998, I co-organized the Workshop on Combining AI and Graphics for the Interface of the Future at the ECAI conference in Brighton, UK.

The following is a list of events, for which I've been on the Program Committee: IUI 2009, IE 2008 - Intelligent Environments, MEIS 08, AITAmI-08, INTETAIN 2008, ICAT 2007, ISMAR 2007, AmI-07, IEEE Tabletop 2007, ACM Multimedia 2007, IE 2007 - Intelligent Environments, AITAmI-06, IUI 2006, Perception and Interactive Technologies 2006 CoMoRea 2005 IUI 2005, AIMS workshop at Ubicomp 2004, CoMoRea 2004 IUI 2004, ABIS 2003, STARS 2003, AIMS workshop at Ubicomp 2003, AIMS workshop at ECAI 2002, AIMS workshop at ECAI 2000

Additionally, I've served as a reviewer for IUI 2008, ACM CHI 2008, IEEE Visualization 2007, VAST 2007, InfoVis 2007, ACM CHI 2007, Ubicomp 2006, Pervasive 2006, UIST 2006, VIS 2006, ISMAR 2005, CHI 2005, UIST 2005, ECSCW 2005, Pervasive 2005, ISMAR 2005, IUI 2005, ISMAR 2004, Pervasive 2004, ISWC 2004, Mobisys 2004, IUI 2004, ISMAR 2003, Ubicomp 2003, SIGGRAPH 2003, UIST 2002, SoftCOM 2002, UIST 2001, ISAR 2001, SoftCOM 2001 and ACM SIGGRAPH 1998,

I'm a member of the editorial board of the "it - Information Technology" Journal by Oldenbourg Wissenschaftsverlag. Its main focus is the publication of methods and innovative applications of informatics and information technology which have been developed worldwide - with an emphasis on the German language area - and which are on the cusp of industrial application.

I'm also on the editorial board of the Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments by IOS press. It aims to discuss the latest developments on Ambient Intelligence (AmI) and Smart Environments (SmE).

Together with a group of Computer Scientists who are all funded under DFG's Emmy Noether-program, I've coauthored a position paper about future directions for research in computer science, as well as suggestions for the German academic system. Given the nature of the paper, it is in German, of course. We published it online under www.bonner-thesen.de and there is a PDF document of it for printing and offline reading.

Being a member of the German Computer Science Association (GI) since 1986, I joined their "Beirat der Universitätsprofessoren" (GIBU) and was elected to become a member of the GIBU steering committee in 2005. The GIBU represents the interests of German university professors within the GI.
